Even at generous giving levels, the contributions are a fraction of public, school income from taxes. In Des Moines, even gifts totaling millions pale before a $180 million annual budget.

It was really class of him to say that." At a ceremony to honor Weitz's largess, Ron Sallade, supervisor for the Success program, said, "It's one thing to give your own money. It's really incredible to believe in it so much you raise money like Anonymous donations, too, seem to be increasing. To help a cluster of non-English-speaking students at Holy Family, nine doctors have decided to each pay for one month's expenses for a teacher through the nine-month school year. Krause, too, was quietly making monthly donations before the scope of his dream became too big.

But that anonymity came crashing to an end Thursday night. "It means our future, is what it means," teacher Sandy Rouse said over the ruckus. In the small gym, benefactors, teachers and parents jostled past oversized sign-up sheets for contributions toward "Library Renovation" or "Computers." No fewer than five people used the word "overwhelming" to describe the impact of the money about $150,000 from Krause, $150,000 from donations made Thursday, and an anticipated $100,000 from upcoming contributions. The party ended shortly after Krause joined one of the parents, Kathleen Dautremont, in a horribly butchered rendition of "I Just Called To Say I Love You." At least, that's what he said it was. "It takes $3,000, and I'll stop," shouted Krause in mid-song.
