This volume’s 4-star rating is very different from the first volume’s 4-star rating because HOLY sh*t. Chainsaw Man starts off, to simply put it, cool as f*ck. We are introduced to Denji (no last name) who has a dead father with a lot of debt. At his father’s grave he finds Pochita (a dog with a chainsaw)! In order to repay his father’s debt, Denji decides to kill devils for money and from there...he meets a bunch of people...and makes a bunch of decisions all to accomplish his goal: of feeling something. And you know, I can relate to that. Originally, you can believe this manga follows a horny teenager trying to live life but….towards the later chapters...the plot quite literally thickens. We are also introduced to one of the best villains I have witnessed in anime because they are also: COOL AS f*ck. The reasonings behind each specific character is what I live for. You know that’s my thing, character-based reader and all. That final arc is truly what put me on edge to see all these characters in unpredictable lights. I do have minor complaints, mainly on character understandment (I know what I like!!!!!!!!!) but I am strongly convinced that it will be smoothed out in regards to the anime.

When analyzing the manga there are many factors you have to consider, since any completion regarding anything in particular, is still nonexistent. First, there’s the potential this manga has in anime format (coming hopefully in the next 2 years). This potential is limitless, not only because the manga surpasses original shonen-jump manga boundaries, but also because of the manga’s individuality. This manga introduces characters that do not fit perfectly in the aspect manga stereotype, which leads into another point in the manga’s potential: the characters. These characters are subtly complex in writing, but I know in an animated format their flaws, motivations, dreams, desires, and relief will shine through wonderfully. Next, that leads into the intricate plot. In no way am I here to explain the inner hindering of that complexity: because frankly, your girl did not understand it’s depth. I’ll link some medias below if you’re curious. These explain multiple threads, biblical parallels, and the overall atmosphere of the story better than I truly could. Lastly, regarding potential, we need to check the manga’s popularity. A committed fan base is a must for a successful anime and CSM has already got that covered. Hell, the whole reason i started this manga is because of anitwit’s input.

The amazing thing that I am recognizing with mangas is the ability to adapt. This ability makes each manga's storyline so unique and so incredibly special because EVERYTHING matters. The small glimpse of a door in an earlier chapter can turn into a traumatic event in later chapters because NOTHING is solidified. Volume 11 ends with chapter 97 which is the conclusion for part 1 (which again) is just the BEGINNING. Manga artists/authors have so much creative freedom and storytelling powers that it is insane to take any event that has occurred literally, there is simply too much deeper meanings underneath every line drawn in. I find that hauntingly beautiful, but the reader in me needs those facts laid out. This creates definitely a learning curve.

Upon ending analysis, I realize yet again, popular manga is popular for a reason, and the LEAST I can do is appreciate that. I will definitely be reading part 2...but not until many many many chapters are out. Okay now then, please remember this review once the anime is popular because I need to feel elite. I’m so glad I ended 2020 with this creation.

My thoughts on the series as a whole:
I was very excited to start this manga because I'd heard the author is a genius for creating an innovative story with realistic characters.
Turned out my brain is so small. I couldn't find the genius of this manga. Neither did I find realistic characters.
This manga, as imaginative as it is, lacks creativity. By that, I mean many ideas are introduced but left unrefined, unable to stick together in order to make a structure and plot. While some fighting settings and devils are so interesting and new, the narrative and themes are uncreative and lacking.
I had issues with both the writing and the art.

Writing:
-Dialogues:
my biggest problem with this manga. The dialogues were just poorly written. Very artificial and straight to the point, sometimes just retelling what I already knew. This way of "telling instead of showing" stoped me from getting close to the world or characters, almost felt like sitting in a classroom where everything is just being said and repeated in a stiff way without letting you to observe and learn for yourself. I could hear the author's voice in my head saying :
"Dear reader, here you're supposed to feel sad"
"Dear reader, here you're supposed to be shocked"

"bang!"
This, stole the opportunity from the art to speak for itself and ended up being a boring read.
At times, it tries to be somehow "dark" or "deep" but rather than taking you to the world and help you feel the ugliness of it, we are spoon fed with forced "dark" mechanical sentences.

juvenile humor could have worked, but I'm a little too old for that.

-Characters:
Almost every character was so trope-y. You could describe their whole personality with 2 or 3 traits. This left them painfully predictable. I couldn't care for any of them. And as someone super emotional, it was surprising how I didn't cry or laughed while reading this.
Denji as the MC was shallow, following the trends in front of him, and no amount of "I just want to touch boobs" or "I just want to live a normal life" made him realistic, relatable or interesting for me.

Female characters were just BAD. I mean, well, I can understand why Power and Makima were sexualized. It was part of the story and the themes, so I could pass them. But sexualizing every other female character just showed how uncreative the author is, in giving actual personalities to females, and impatient in respecting his female audience. It's just way cliché and boring to sexualize women in stories, which also ruined the significance of Makima's character.

Speaking of Makima, it was obvious that she is the antagonist from the beginning(I think it was intentional). So I was hoping for at least a good motivation or backstory. Sadly this also ended up being very cliché and Makima became the least interesting antagonist I've seen with her bland personality and weird smile which I guess was supposed to be attractive and seductive?!

One good thing though, was Denji and Power dynamic. I enjoyed their dynamic almost to the end until the "bath" scene happened. I absolutely adored how Denji realized that this is not "naughty". However, a moment later, my adoration vanished with power saying "what is naughty?" It's just my personal feeling but Power being passive in this relationship and dynamic killed the moment for me and my last hopes of liking this manga. Later on, with everything that happened around Power's death and their dialogues, This dynamic turned into sth cartoonish, rather than sth meaningful.

-Pace:
IDK how but in the first half of the story things happen so fast, yet the story as a whole progresses so slowly, to the point that I was still waiting for the story to begin around chapter 30 or sth. In the second half things still happen so fast. But the bigger problem is lack of cohesion and direction. It feels like the author is just trying every possible plot twist without proper buildup. Yet no amount of shock and plot twist made the main points of story less predictable. This also led to a failure in using political and philosophical themes, since there were not enough chapters to explore them properly and stringing them to the characters in an emotional way. The ideas are there, but don't have any emotional weight.

Art:
while I appreciate very imaginative devil designs, I think the character designs were terrible. Every character has the same soulless eyes, and face expressions are done poorly. I found the side characters to be quite forgettable.
I also found the action lacking. In many parts there is actually no "action", it's just an "action pose" in one panel and guts splitting everywhere in the next panel. The choreography is missing.
paneling and framing did not have problems but weren't special either. I couldn't find many innovative angles and frames.

All these things made me feel the author himself didn't like this story and was not enjoying and respecting his own work, so I was surprised there's going to be a part 2.
All that said, I still get why CSM is hyped and I respect it. But I wished other more deserving series were discussed more and could get this same hype too.

so part one is over.

i honestly can't find it in me to care. the reviews are like "it's so sad, the pain" etc etc.

i could barely keep the characters apart? who were all these people in the last two volumes especially?

everytime i started grasping the role of a character they just... died. sometimes after like five chapters. i'm sorry but am i supposed to be sad? i barely knew them. none of them had enough depth to get attached to in the first place and only being around for two volumes also didn't help.

denji is so f*cking dumb, i can't with him. there was so much talk about boobs and for what. the anime trailer made this seem much more serious (i have yet to see the anime itself) so maybe i went into this with wrong expectations.

sometimes i feel like the mangaka just wrote and drew whatever? i'm still looking for the plot of this. there's barely any consistency, things change so rapidly they give me whiplash. explanations given make as much sense as the ramblings of flat earthers.

i only read this because of a tweet about a certain character who kinda delivered but i also still don't really know what their deal was.

the only positive thing i have to say that it's very fast to read. a volume takes me like 15 minutes max and it's not boring (at least not consistently) so i also find myself clicking on the next volume every time i finish one

overall i'm confused why this is THE manga everyone is raving about

The insane finale of Chainsaw Man’s first major story arc, and honestly it works as a perfectly satisfying ending overall. The fact that there’s more to come is just the icing on the cake.

Makima’s ultimate plan is in full bloom and she’s gone full on dark psychotic mastermind mode, unleashing absolute chaos and destruction for the sake of reshaping the world in her own image of her twisted ideals. Denji’s the only one left that can stop the woman that stole his heart from destroying everything he’s ever held dear.

This whole volume felt like a dark, surrealistic subversion of the superhero origin story. Denji gets some much-needed development and growth as he finally learns to stand on his own and think for himself instead of being abused and manipulated by everyone around him. Against all odds, he fights to save the reality that so many of his friends and loved ones died trying to protect.

Makima turned out to be a brilliant villain and it was awesome to see a female antagonist in such an intimidating, intelligent and powerful role. Not many manga out there have pulled something like that off. In fact, not many stories in general have done a central female antagonist so well.

The resolution of this story arc is surprisingly emotional and philosophical. It perfectly subverts the simplistic, comical and sometimes downright stupid origins of where the story first began. This bait and switch tactic was meticulously planned out by the author to pull the rug out from under the reader’s feet by steering the narrative into a much more serious direction and he did a good job pulling it off.

My rating: 4.5/5

This series is wild! And it goes out with a bang for the end of the first story arc. It may not necessarily make a lot of sense, but it certainly is cool as hell and even a little touching.

I went from disliking the first volumes to being a devoted fan here at the conclusion, so I'm happy that the second arc is supposed to begin publication in Japan next month.

Well that was one hell of an ending to part 1. I finished the whole thing in less than 2 days despite having school, which is something I absolutely never do.

I'm honestly surprised that I wasn't spoiled at all about the last few chapters, not even what happened to Makima.

To be honest I'm kinda scared and also excited as to what future devils and threats we will see(I'm just excited to finally be able to see Asa

and more of Yoshida)

Kinda looking forward to Nayuta and Denji spending more time together, they have such found family potential. I HOPE things will get less depressing from here. Also,

Also no one seems to mention this and I don't know why, but the thing with Denji and his father is messed up. Poor boy has gone through so much and he's only 16.

I'm now really looking forward to part 2, since pretty much all of the big conflicts and mysteries (Like what's behind that door, MAKIMA, Who is Pochita, etc) have been answered and resolved.

Oh well.
I've got 4 volume to go through as of 23/8/23

Let's see what's next and again,

f*ck you Makima

The final volume of the first part of Chainsaw Man has all the coolness and amazing artwork the series is known for, but none of the great storytelling. The plot is rushed, and there are some many things happening that everything becomes so jumbled and convoluted.

Chainsaw Man ends up an extremely high note. With a lot of quite moments that really add into Denji as a character. The insane last page of the previous volume goes right into this and a return of a character to push Denji to come back from his hell is both powerful and well done.

The last few pages give a very hopeful feel despite all the darkness around it. I'm assuming it will continue due to the final page but man, what a great f*cking ending.

A 5 out of 5.

This is a review of the complete series of Chainsaw Man Part 1.

f*ck.
This series is so interesting. At first you look at it and you think it's probably this absolutely batsh*t insane, over the top action fun gore madness. And that it is.
But it also breaks your heart with the most simple sentiments and thoughts and gestures by the characters. Denji, the main character is so pure, which normally you wouldn't call a guy who can turn into a chainsaw-headed monster and wants to touch boobs more than anything, enough to have that as his big reason why needs to survive. It's such an honest look at this person, who never had anything in his life.
Many times simple characters are played as resistant to outside influences and they are good because they are simple. But here you know Denji can be pushed around just as much as anyone else and I wanted to hug him so much, because f*ck it. The dude is dumb, so very dumb and he deserves more than this bullsh*t. He doesn't use big words and he isn't out there to change the world.
By the end he is stuck with responsibilities that are much bigger than his intellectual capabilities. Part 2 will be interesting. But I have hope for him, because I don't want to believe he can't be great.

I glanced at the author's other bigger work, Fire Punch. Haven't read it yet, so no comment on the story and such, but looking at the two different series, he is capable of very loose and sketchy art (like here) and neat and precise (like there). That's range and I think it's good he does that. A lot of this one's energy would have been lost with too much precision.
It also has a bunch of great character design, ranging from the normal and subtle for the humans (I love Kishibe's face so much) to the absolute trippy and weird. The author made a great choice with Pochita, though, a weird cutesy mascot is always good for marketing.

There are a bunch of concepts and things left to deal with in Part 2. Denji needs to work on himself more, probably a bunch of the old characters will return in different forms. We still have Kishibe, who is badass and interesting. Kobeni is still anxiety incarnate, girl also needs some help. Those two should team up, the person who gives no f*cks and the person who is made entirely of f*cks being given. Maybe more exploration of foreign places and people dealing with the supernatural elements of the story? Dunno.

Chainsaw Man vol. 11

The final volume of Chainsaw Man starts with the titular character fighting with Makima. The fight isn't going well, but with the help of Pochita, Power is temporarily revived, with far greater strength and abilities and she saves Chainsaw Man. After that, he turns back into Denji. Kishibe finds him and puts both him and Kobeni into a safe house, in order to be protected from Makima. Denji stays there for a very short amount of time and after seeing on tv how much people love and admire him, he decides to go out and face Makima for one final fight.
This was a great volume and a very fitting ending to the series. Denji's character development since the beginning of the series is incredible and that's especially apparent at the end, where we see a much more mature Denji. He's still a teen and his main motivation for doing what he does is still the fact that he's horny and he wants to have sex, but now he has another layer to his personality, a much deeper one. Another character with great character development was Power. Her personality in this volume, compared to her personality in the first volume, is like she's an entirely different character, but this change didn't happen out of the blue, it was an organic change that was caused by the situations she had to go through. Furthermore, in this volume we get a bit more into Kobeni's character, which was very interesting. I hope that she'll have a role in the second part of the manga. Now that it's finished, it seems to me that one of the main themes of the series is the power of friendship. That's very clear in most volumes of the series, but especially in this one. Thanks to his friendship with Power, Denji is able to survive a fight that he couldn't otherwise. Another important theme of this volume is the need for love and human connection. This is something found in Denji's character, but also Makima's. We all feel the need to connect with other people, in meaningful and equal relationships and that was Makima's reason for doing everything she did. Moreover, this volume is extremely fast paced. Since it's the final volume, it has a lot of action. All the action here is wonderful. The stakes are extremely high and the way everything is written is perfect. Everything happens so fast that I didn't even realised when I reached the ending. And what an ending it was! It was very sweet and powerful and it showed how much Denji has grown. It was a very fitting ending for the series, while it also makes me very excited for the second part.
Tatsuki Fujimoto's artwork in this volume was great. Unlike the previous volume, for whom I had some complaints, the character designs here were fantastic and extremely epic. The fight scenes were incredible and the more quiet and slow moments were also beautiful. Fujimoto's attention to detail made every panel seem beautiful, even if the images depicted in it were violent and gory.
Overall, this was a great volume and an incredible manga series in general. I can't wait for the second part to come out!

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 11: Forza, Chainsaw Man! (26)

Far from the worst ending I've ever read (and it's not even really the end) but this manga is really starting to lose me. It'd be unfair of me to expect another Fire Punch tier masterpiece, but I'm realizing I fell into the trap of thinking about it harder than the author seems to be. You never want that to happen. Partly my own fault, but still. The fighting in these two volumes was mostly meaningless spectacle, and Makima's motive was way too cliche. World peace without freedom? That's like half of all battle shounen villains. The fangirl aspect of her character was funny, but too little too late. Ever since she stopped making any expressions other than smug smiles my interest has been declining. The final nail in the coffin was the omission of any mention of the movie that changed her life. Guess that was just a throwaway line. That's what I would say, if movies didn't come up right at the end. What on Earth is Fujimoto going for?

Chainsaw Man, Vol. 11: Forza, Chainsaw Man! (27)

I think a comparison with Fire Punch is instructive. Judah had even less characterization than Makima, and Agni was even more obsessed with her. But it made sense, because it all tied into Luna and LIVE. You could easily explain Agni's entire character with reference to the LIVE scene. Denji is an even simpler character, but his obsession with Makima is harder to explain, because there's nothing to adhere to. The closest Fujimoto can come to this is a single page compilation of Makima faces. But if it's just because she's hot, he could just as easily be obsessed with Reze, or any hot girl he could pick up on the street. The ease with which he forgot about Reze clashes with his l.o.v.e. for Makima. It almost feels like the Reze arc happened in some parallel universe. Denji doesn't even mention her, or seem to realize she's still alive. Denji is just attached to Makima because without it there's no story. You could argue it's to mirror Makima's fangirliness, but there's only one Chainsaw Man, and there are plenty of groomy mommies with big asses.

The action's still cool, it's still funny (the Kobeni chapters were killer), and the move back to Jump+ might mean there'll be stuff you can't put in print. Still, I'm not feeling very attached.

I'm re-reading this because this will be adapted into an anime soon, and another reason is because this has become a big part of my life when I started reading it September of 2020. It was one of the best manga I've read, and reading it again is really worth my time.

What a wonderful ending - for Act 1.

Makima, the greatest evil of Act 1, has been defeated in the most anticlimactic way. No complaints here; I think, Denji being the simple person that he is, has given the most perfect blow of death to the monster that is the Control devil.

The biggest loophole of Makima is that she wasn't able to recognize faces, but she can memorize scent. She knows the scent of the Chainsaw since chapter 1, which is why it was easy for her to get to Denji, but never did she pay attention to how Denji smells, which got her killed.

Denji eating Makima is a powerful symbol here. The Chainsaw eats any devil that it defeated, nullifying their existence. Denji eats Makima for the same purpose - for the existence of Makima be nullified.

But it was Makima who ceased to exist, not the Domination (Control) devil. And so the Control devil was reborn, but this time, it was in the right hands. I cannot seriously wait for Act 2, and also, I want to know why Kobeni has been kept alive. We still don't know her devil, and I think Kobeni will be the sidekick of the Chainsaw for the next Act.

Thank you, Fujimoto! This will not be my last re-read.

Honestly, it’s the most strange, unique, series I’ve possibly ever come across. I think that’s why it is so popular and stands out so much. Denji frustrates me sometimes but then he always ends up becoming more likeable by making the right decisions, or stumbling into them lol
Realistically, I could have binge read this a lot quicker, but I tried to read it one volume per night in between my main reads. But there was a few times I had to read more than one because of the cliffhangers.

If you want a fast-paced, action-packed, mind-boggling series to get stuck into, Chainsaw Man is for you. I really dig the art style, especially during the fight scenes. There is SO much detail put in.

JFC. I don't know that I have the words. Such a wild ride, intense from start to finish, it all comes together. This could have easily been the end of the series, but I guess Fujimoto has more ambition for this ridiculous story. I don't know where we go from here, and to be honest I'm a little confused about what Makima said last volume about how Chainsaw Man erases the devils he eats. Not sure how that comes together, but I'm forever on board with Chainsaw Man.
